Proposes Director of E-Communications Position &
Newsletter Editor Position
I stepped up as Director of E-Communications for the 2015-2016 year, and would like to continue on for 2016-2017. For the first part of the year I found that I was only responding to requests from fellow board members within the organization (partly due to my schedule with finishing up a dance MFA program) as a way of providing support, but have recently renewed my personal sense of initiative in creating new actions for the betterment of CDEA. I feel like I can do the most good for the organization by continuing on in this role for one more year. By re-electing me to the role of Director of E-Communications CDEA will be better able to cement the role and duties of this post, while also improving overall operation, efforts, and actions having to do with web-maintenance and newsletter creation and dissemination. I am looking forward to working with the executive board to bring our website to the next phase of relevance and usability.

Proposes Grants/Scholarships Researcher Position
I would be happy to continue developing the Grants/Scholarships Resources page for CDEA. In my first year in this position, I created quarterly updates for the website so all CDEA members have access to the latest dance related grant listings. I have compiled lists of grants that CDEA members may consider to supplement their funds for professional development, independent work or to directly support their teaching. I have researched in-state options from government (state, regional, local) and applicable national granting organizations that have a record of funding dance education and dance educators and would like to stay on in this capacity.
Proposes Liaison to Dance USA (national & state level) Position &
Membership & NHSDA Site Cultivation in San Diego Region Position
I learned that CDEA is seeking a greater presence and connection to San Diego dance educators and so am proposing a regionally based greater board position of NHSDA and member cultivation in the San Diego Region. I will also be representing CDEA to Dance USA at their national level board meetings and helping to develop an informed dialogue between those two organizations.
Proposes Diversity Director Position
I would like to continue on as Diversity Director for CDEA. Last year I was able to get oriented to the organization and begin to formulate some events, programs and directions that we could take as an organization focusing on diversity, inclusion and equity. I would like to serve on CDEA greater board with an eye for representing and supporting all populations of dance educators in California. I would also like to reach out to and notify existing CDEA members of opportunities related to learning more about diversity and cultural competency. Finally I hope to organize and promote opportunities to gather and recruit prospective CDEA members, while creating a network of dance educators who exhibit the diversity in California.
Proposes Disability/Inclusivity Advocate
As the Disability/Inclusivity Advocate, I’d be available to advise on making dance teaching inclusive. I have experience in this vein as a former dancer and rehearsal director with AXIS Dance Company and I continue this work as I build my school’s inclusive dance program. I would be a resource for CDEA’s membership regarding how to think about the integration of inclusivity into technical training and how to be inclusive without diminishing any individual’s uniqueness. I would work with the executive board to develop best practices guides for CDEA regarding disability/inclusivity in dance.
Proposes Editor/Proofreader and
Nor-Cal NHSDA Coordinator Position
I would like to nominate myself as Editor/Proofreader for CDEA. I believe that this position will benefit CDEA by helping make our publications (such as the recent white paper and the newsletter) as effective as possible, with language that reads smoothly and is appropriate to each situation. I believe I am uniquely prepared for this task, as a life-long stickler for grammar and a careful and painstaking writer. I would be pleased to help CDEA in this way.
In addition, I would be happy to stay on the Greater Board as NHSDA Coordinator – North. In this capacity I will be to reach out to schools that are likely prospects for new NHSDA chapters, contact schools which have let their chapters lapse, and serve as a resource for chapter sponsors with any questions about the honor society and its processes. I will also help coordinate with the Nor-Cal sites we are featuring, in rotation each year, as model high school dance programs.
Proposes Policy, Technical and Proposal Writing Position
I am writing to you to propose a greater board position to assist CDEA with policy, technical, and proposal writing. With the emergence of potentially new areas of the greater board scope such as diversity, grants, credentialing, standards updates and with the forging of new partnerships with Cahperd and other organizations, I will be glad to provide technical and proposal writing support for the board of CDEA and work with our proofreader/editors to assist them in generating content for publications as needed.
Proposes Dance Credential Task Force Developer position
I would like to propose a position responsible for the creation of a CDEA led Dance Credential Task Force within the greater board. I see this position as cohort-driven with a grade TK-6 dance educator, grade 7-8 dance educator, grade 9-12 dance educator (public, private, and charter), CCC dance educator, UC and CSU Dance Educator, and a member from The California Arts Project and CCTC. This task force would ensure as the credential progresses, all stakeholders understand the intricacies of a policy reform at the college level and the standards and requirements needed to have students obtain a dance credential.
Proposes Dance Credential Site coordinator at CSU East Bay Position
In the capacity of Dance Credential Site Coordinator at CSU East Bay, I would help CDEA stay connected to one of the early adopter sites for the newly forming dance credential programs. I would collaborate with other greater board members working on the credential and report to the executive board with updates on emerging plans and policies related to the structuring of a dance credential program specifically at the CSU level.
Nina Haft is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at CSU East Bay, Co-Director of the Dance Program, Director of Dance Ensembles, and CSUEB faculty liaison to the Bay Area Dance Exchange and the American College Dance Association. Nina teaches at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, where she has teaches contemporary dance for youth and adults. Nina Haft & Company is in residence there.
Proposes Communications Video-Maker for CDEA
Heather Castillo has served as the Secretary for CDEA in the 2016 year and is rotating off the executive board. She would like to be an “occasional video-maker” for CDEA on the greater board who could assist with creating video content for our social media platforms including out website. Her video conveying our organization’s thanks to all stakeholders involved with the passage of SB916 received 32,000 hits and 10K views in the week the bills passed.
