FIGHTING FOR DANCE EDUCATION AND RECOGNITION

The CDEA Board of Directors urges you to read the following "e-mail petition"
from a Dance Professional in Long Island, New York who is fighting to change
her local High Schools Educational System.

HELLO ALL:

As much as this topic deserves a novel to be written instead of a bulletin e-mail, I will make this as concise as possible to be conservative with regard to the timeliness of this matter.

On Thursday, June 5th at 8 PM, I will be joining a student of the Sachem School District and the parents of this high school student at a Sachem School District Board Meeting to fight for the rights of this individual to choose Dance as part of her high school curriculum.

This is not as cut and dry as it sounds. For those unaware, Long Island has a well received program called BOCES that allows high school students to attend their regular high school for all academic classes and then attend BOCES for Career Education. The Sachem School District has deemed Dance as a non-career. What does that mean? Basically, they have decided that Dance, as an art, is not a viable profession; it is not a career choice, and as a matter of contention, it has been said that a Professional Dancer is not something that one becomes in the real world. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE??? IS THIS FOOTLOOSE??? This debate is near and dear to me: not only am I this student's teacher and mentor, but I am a professional dancer and THIS EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME WHEN I ATTENDED SACHEM HIGH SCHOOL OVER 12 YEARS AGO. Luckily for this student, this is not something that we are going to let happen without a fight.

Get this - by attending BOCES this student will have the opportunity to take classes like Dance History, Dance Management, and have the chance to take master classes of various styles. Can you imagine NOT wanting to arm your future alumni with this advantage when sending them out into the "real world?" Some of the careers that are acceptable include: Horse Science and Management, Carpentry, and Culinary Arts.

Thanks for your time thus far. If you would like to read more about what BOCES offers to students of Dance, click here:

ABOUT ME:

I am a professional dancer and have been for my entire adult life. What that means, quite literally, is that I have made a living doing something that I am proficient in; it is something that I am not only passionate about, but it is also a specialized skill that has afforded me every necessity and luxury that I have to date. While many of the people receiving this e-mail may think of this as a completely logical profession, it is apparently not regarded as such by the Sachem School District of Long Island, New York.

As some of you may know, I am not only a professional dancer, I am also co-owner of a dance studio here on Long Island - Christopher Studio of Dance and Theatre Arts. I was not allowed to go to BOCES and have had to spend time, money, and the help of others to learn things about auditioning, managing a dance studio, opening a business, and creating well-rounded dance education for myself. I did this instead of going to college partly because I was not given the guidance by the public school system that still seems to have a bad taste in it's mouth about dancing. Let's not allow this disadvantage to propagated any further.

Thanks,
Tara Memi
10 year Radio City Rockette
Co-owner, Christopher Studio of Dance and Theatre Arts
